Lex Borghans is a professor of labour economics and social policy at the Department of Economics and the Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA) at Maastricht University. His research focuses on knowledge and skills acquisition in education and at the workplace, and the way this human capital is used in the labour market. His current research focuses on the optimal structure of education from an economic perspective and the significance of non-cognitive skills for success in people education, work and private lives. He also studies labour migration and the flexibility of the Dutch labour market. He has been published in various journals, including the Economic Journal, Journal of Human Resources, European Economic Review and Oxford Economic Papers.
